Similar to the unease I felt when Heath Ledger was first cast as The Joker, when news broke that Anne Hathaway would be Selina Kyle aka Catwoman in The Dark Knight Rises my immediate befuddled reaction was something like ”you mean that bony bird-faced chick with the big teeth from The Princess Diaries?”
However, if Ledger’s hauntingly amazing Oscar winning performance taught Bat-fans anything, it’s that writer / director Christopher Nolan damn well knows exactly what he’s doing.
I mean, before The Dark Knight was released and Heath Ledger totally owned the role of The Joker by turning him into a chillingly glorious grungy emblem of chaos personified, a lot of people thought that Jack Nicholson’s 1988 portrayal of the clown prince of crime would be difficult to top.
Now it’s like watching your weird loser uncle dress up like a clown at a kid’s birthday party.
As you can see in the TV spot below, Anne Hathaway’s Selina Kyle is oozing with sassy moral ambiguity while simultaneously kicking ass and rocking the shit out of her sexy yet functional black catsuit, so it’s probably a safe bet to assume that Nolan has again knocked out of the park with some inspired casting.
